The Waiting Is the Hardest Part: Coping With Test and Biopsy Anxiety

There’s a particular kind of anxiety that comes with waiting for results.
It’s not loud all the time. It doesn’t always look like panic. Sometimes it’s quiet, sitting in the background of your day. Other times it shows up all at once, making it hard to focus on anything else.
Waiting for test results or a biopsy can feel like your life is on pause, while your mind races ahead.
You might find yourself:
- Running through every possible outcome
- Overanalyzing how you feel physically
- Googling things you wish you hadn’t
- Trying to prepare for answers you don’t have yet
This kind of waiting is difficult because it comes with uncertainty. And uncertainty is something we naturally try to solve.
The truth is, this is a space that cannot be solved. It can only be moved through.
One of the most helpful things you can do is gently bring your focus back to what is actually known right now. Not what might happen. Not what you’re afraid of. Just what is true in this moment.
You got through the appointment.
You are doing what you can.
You are here.
It can also help to create small anchors in your day. Simple things that give your mind somewhere to land. A short walk, a favorite show, a conversation with someone you trust. These do not erase the waiting, but they can make it feel more manageable.
You do not have to be strong every minute of this. You do not have to stay positive. It is okay to feel anxious, distracted, or overwhelmed.
If anything, this is a time to be especially gentle with yourself.
And if you can, let someone sit in the waiting with you. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, or your Wellnest Circle, you don’t have to carry the uncertainty alone.
The results will come. Answers will follow.
But for now, this moment matters too. And getting through it, one hour at a time, is enough.
